It is absolutely a terrible idea to break up with someone over IM. If you care for her and want her to move on than you should make sure the transition is easy. IM would only make her feel insignificant and it's likely she will find it difficult to forget about the relationship. Invite her out somewhere she feels comfortable and casual, you do not want to give her the wrong impression that you are preparing a romantic evening. A cafe is acceptable. Explain why you feel the relationship isn't working and that you are set on ending it.
